Is Sunbrella® waterproof?

No, and that is deliberate. Standard Sunbrella® is 100% solution-dyed acrylic: water repellent and breathable. The breathability is the whole reason a boat cover made from it does not trap condensation underneath. Only the PVC-backed versions are waterproof, and they are a different product with different trade-offs.

Why breathable beats waterproof on a cover

Put a genuinely waterproof cover over a boat, a machine or a stack of timber and you seal moisture in as well as out. Air warms during the day, cools at night, and the moisture it carries condenses on the underside of the cover and drips back onto what you were protecting. Mildew follows.

A tightly woven, water repellent acrylic sheds rain from above while still letting vapour escape from below. That is why marine grade acrylic became the standard for covers that stay on for months.

What solution dyeing does

In most fabrics, color is applied to the surface of a finished fiber. In solution dyeing, pigment is mixed into the acrylic before the fiber is formed, so color runs all the way through. There is no dyed surface layer to wear away or bleach out.

This is why reds and blues in this class hold their shade through seasons of direct sun, where surface-dyed fabrics fade toward pink and grey.

Marine grade or upholstery grade?

Marine / awning Upholstery
Hand Firm, crisp Softer, more supple
Weave Tighter More open
Dimensional stability High — holds tension Lower
Right for Awnings, boat covers, biminis, equipment covers Cushions, seating, indoor and outdoor furniture
Wrong for Anything you sit on Anything under tension

The mistake people make is buying marine grade for cushions because it sounds tougher. It is tougher, and it is also stiff and uncomfortable to sit on.

Order by pattern code, not by color name

Sunbrella patterns carry codes such as 6008-0000 or 4751-0000. If you are replacing a panel on an existing awning or cover, the code is the only reliable way to get the same cloth — color names repeat between collections and shades named the same are not always the same fabric.

The code is usually printed on the selvage of the original fabric. If you can find it, use it.

Frequently asked

Can I make it waterproof? There are aftermarket treatments that improve repellency, but they also reduce breathability, which removes the main advantage. If you need waterproof, buy a PVC-backed fabric instead.

How long does it last outdoors? This class of fabric is built for years of exposure rather than seasons. Actual life depends on climate, tension and how it is stored.

Does it need re-proofing? The water repellent finish diminishes with age and cleaning, and can be reapplied. The color does not need anything — it is in the fiber.

What width does it come in? Commonly 46 inch and 60 inch depending on the pattern. Check the specific product before planning a cut.
