How to Choose a Finished Tarp

Choose a finished tarp by size, material system, edge construction, hardware, exposure, and the way it will be installed. Color and nominal dimensions are only the start. A poly utility tarp, mesh truck tarp, coated-vinyl cover, draining tarp, and fitted equipment cover solve different problems.

Raw fabric and a finished tarp are different products

Raw fabric is specified by width, fiber, weave, coating, finish, and yardage. A finished tarp adds seams, hems, reinforcement, grommets or other hardware, and a final size. Those fabrication details control fit and load paths, so do not select a finished cover from the face material alone.

Field What to confirm
Size Whether the listing is nominal, cut, or finished size
Material Polyethylene, coated vinyl, nylon mesh, polyester mesh, or another named system
Construction Solid, mesh, draining, fitted, flat, or shaped cover
Edges Hem, webbing, rope, reinforcement patches, and corner construction
Hardware Grommet type and spacing, straps, buckles, hooks, or attachment points
Exposure Wind, abrasion, standing water, sun, temperature, and movement expected in service

Do not assume “tarp” means waterproof

Water behavior depends on the exact sheet or fabric, coating or laminate, seams, holes, hardware, slope, and condition. Mesh tarps are intentionally open. Solid tarps can still leak at seams, wear points, or penetrations. Ask for the specific barrier requirement instead of relying on the category name.

Measure for the installation

For a stock tarp, compare the listed finished size with the surface and overlap required. For a fitted or custom cover, record length, width, height or drop, attachment points, obstructions, hardware, and how the cover will be tensioned. Photos and a simple dimensioned sketch reduce ambiguity.

Before ordering

  • Confirm the current color, size, material, and hardware configuration.
  • Check whether dimensions are nominal or finished.
  • Identify edges that will see concentrated load or abrasion.
  • Describe the installation when requesting custom work.

Browse Tarps and Covers or request custom work. For material behavior, compare coatings, DWR, and laminates.
