PU Coating vs DWR vs Laminate

DWR, coatings and laminates do different jobs. DWR helps water bead on the face; a coating or laminate can form the water barrier. Whether the finished material is waterproof depends on the exact specification, pressure rating, condition and seams.

The three layers

DWR

A durable water repellent finish on the face makes water bead instead of soaking in. It does not seal the fabric, and it wears off with abrasion and washing. It can usually be revived with heat or reapplied as a spray.

Coating

A polyurethane or PVC layer on the back can provide the primary water barrier. Performance varies widely, so compare the listed coating and hydrostatic-head or other test data when water resistance is critical.

Laminate

A membrane bonded to the textile can make the fabric itself waterproof while preserving selected breathability or flexibility. The finished product still needs compatible seams, closures and construction.

And seams beat all three

Every stitch is a hole. A garment sewn from fully waterproof fabric still leaks along the seams unless they are taped or sealed. Waterproofness is a system — fabric plus sealed seams — not a property of the cloth alone. See seam sealing and DWR care.

What to check before ordering

  • Is a coating listed, and what kind?
  • Is DWR listed separately from the coating?
  • Does it say repellent or waterproof? They are not synonyms.
  • Will the finished item have seams sitting in standing water?
