What Is Ripstop Nylon?

Ripstop nylon is nylon fabric built with a reinforcing grid intended to limit the spread of a tear. Ripstop describes the construction, not a universal fiber weight, strength grade, coating, or waterproof rating. The exact cloth still needs a denier, weight, weave, finish, width, and sales format.

What the grid tells you

The visible grid is created by reinforcing yarns placed through the fabric at regular intervals. It can help localize damage, but it does not make every ripstop equally strong or suitable for the same project. A lightweight 70D ripstop and a heavier NyCo camouflage ripstop can share the word “ripstop” while differing in fiber, weight, hand, finish, and intended use.

Specification Why it matters
Fiber Nylon, a nylon/cotton blend, or another fiber system changes moisture, heat, hand, and care
Denier and weight Describe yarn or finished fabric class; neither is a complete strength rating
Grid and weave Change tear propagation, surface appearance, and flexibility
Coating or finish Changes water behavior, stiffness, and the side used during fabrication
Width and cut Determine yield, panel layout, seams, and total yardage

Is ripstop waterproof?

Not by definition. Water behavior comes from the full construction, including any coating, laminate, finish, condition, and seams. A product described only as “70D nylon ripstop” should not be given PU, DWR, waterproof, or water-resistant claims unless those details are documented for that exact material.

Where to start

Use lightweight ripstop where low bulk and a reinforced tear structure fit the project. Use heavier fabrics or local reinforcement where abrasion, hardware loads, or concentrated wear dominate. The seam design and component layout often matter as much as the shell material.

  • Confirm the exact fiber and denier.
  • Check whether a coating or finish is listed.
  • Inspect the face and back before cutting.
  • Test cutting and edge treatment on a scrap.
  • Confirm color, width, and current roll before ordering.
