They solve different problems. CORDURA® resists the abrasion that starts wear; ripstop stops a tear from spreading once it starts. Choose by the failure you expect, or use both — ripstop where weight matters, a CORDURA panel where the wear is.
What each one is
CORDURA® is a dense nylon, usually built from texturized yarn, with a matte face that spreads scraping and rubbing across a broad area. That is why it survives being dragged and set down.
Ripstop is a weaving technique, not a fiber: heavier reinforcement threads are woven at intervals to form a visible grid. If the fabric is punctured, the tear runs into a reinforcement thread and stops instead of propagating.

Which should you choose?
- Abrasion-heavy use (pack bottoms, tool bags, covers) → CORDURA.
- Weight-critical, tear-prone use (liners, ultralight shelters, kites) → ripstop.
- Both — a ripstop body with a CORDURA base panel is a common, effective build.

Frequently asked
Is ripstop waterproof? No. The grid stops tears, not water. Water behavior comes from the coating and finish, as with any woven fabric.
Can ripstop be CORDURA®? They are different axes: CORDURA is a fabric family, ripstop is a weave. A fabric can be a branded nylon woven in a ripstop pattern — check the specific product’s specification.
