1050D and 1680D ballistic nylon are both heavy basket-weave fabrics. 1680D uses heavier yarn and is usually bulkier and stiffer; 1050D is often easier to fold and sew. Choose from the listed construction and test data, not the denier number alone.
What the numbers actually mean
Denier is the weight of 9,000 meters of yarn (see what denier means). A 1680D yarn is heavier than a 1050D yarn, but denier does not prove the strength of the finished cloth. Fiber, weave, finish and test results still matter.

Why heavier is not automatically better
A higher denier adds yarn mass, but it does not provide a universal strength rating. The heavier fabric can add structure and abrasion life, while also adding bulk at folds and stacked seams. In a finished bag, seam design, thread, zippers and attachment points can matter as much as the fabric face.
Which should you choose?
- 1050D — a practical choice when you need a dense fabric that still folds and sews into bags, cases and panels.
- 1680D — consider it when the listed construction gives the structure you need and the extra bulk is acceptable.
