They are not two grades of the same thing. CORDURA® is a brand family of nylon fabrics usually built from texturized, air-jet spun yarns, which gives a matte face with good resistance to scuffing and rubbing. Ballistic nylon is a construction — a 2×2 basket weave of heavy filament yarns, normally 1050 or 1680 denier — which gives a smooth, hard face with good resistance to tearing and puncture. Choose by how your item is likely to fail, not by which sounds tougher.
What is CORDURA® fabric?
CORDURA® is a brand applied to a family of nylon fabrics rather than one specific cloth. The versions most people meet as yardage — 500D and 1000D — are woven from texturized nylon yarns. Texturizing bulks the yarn and lifts the surface slightly, which is why the cloth has a matte, faintly toothy face rather than a sheen.
That surface is the point. When a fabric is dragged across concrete, gravel or a truck bed, the raised yarn structure takes the wear across a broader contact area instead of concentrating it. This is the property gear makers are buying when they specify it for pack bottoms and tool bags.
Because the brand covers a family and not a single specification, two fabrics can both carry the name and behave differently. Denier, coating, finish and construction still need checking.
What is ballistic nylon?
Ballistic nylon is defined by its weave. Two warp yarns and two weft yarns are treated as single units and interlaced in a 2×2 basket pattern, using thick continuous filament nylon rather than texturized yarn. The result is dense, smooth and slightly glossy.
The name is a leftover. The cloth was developed during the Second World War as a flak jacket material, intended to stop shell and grenade fragments rather than bullets, and it was superseded for that role long ago. It survived because the same construction turned out to be excellent for luggage.

A caution on comparisons found elsewhere: figures of the form “X is three times more abrasion resistant than Y” usually quote one test on one pair of fabrics, and they do not transfer between rolls. Treat them as directional, not as specifications.
Which resists abrasion better?
CORDURA®, generally, for its weight. Texturized yarn spreads contact and the raised surface wears down gradually rather than opening. This is why it dominates where gear is repeatedly set down, dragged or scraped.
Which resists tearing better?
Ballistic nylon, generally. The paired yarns of the basket weave share load across a wider structure, so a puncture is less likely to run into a tear. If you are building something that will meet sharp edges or point loads rather than rough surfaces, this is the property that matters.
Which should you choose?
Work backwards from how the finished item will be destroyed.
- Backpacks, rucksacks, pack bottoms — 1000D. Abrasion from setting the pack down is the usual failure.
- Wheeled luggage, hard cases, instrument bags — ballistic nylon. Impact and tear resistance, plus a face that cleans easily.
- Tool bags and range bags — either. 1000D if it will be dragged, ballistic if loaded with sharp-cornered contents.
- Equipment and machine covers — 1000D, mainly for the color range and the price.
- Linings, pockets, internal panels — neither. 500D is lighter and sews more cleanly.
- Motorcycle and powersports panels — 1000D, for slide abrasion.
If color matters, the decision is usually made for you. Ballistic nylon is commonly sold in a narrower color range; the current NY Tarp catalog lists Black, Navy Blue, Olive, and White.
What about water?
Neither is waterproof on its own, and denier has nothing to do with it. Water behavior comes from the coating on the back and the finish on the face. A polyurethane coating with a durable water repellent finish makes a cloth water repellent — it sheds rain and resists wetting out, but sustained pressure will get through, and on a finished item so will the needle holes at every seam.
Which is easier to sew?
CORDURA® at 500D or 1000D is more forgiving. Most people manage 500D on a domestic machine with a size 16 needle; 1000D is possible but harder on the feed. Ballistic nylon at 1680D is dense and stiff enough that a walking foot and a heavier needle become close to necessary. Both fray at cut edges and benefit from a hot knife or a sealed edge.

Is ballistic nylon bulletproof? No. The name is historical. It was developed to resist shrapnel fragments in flak jackets, not bullets, and was replaced for that role decades ago by aramid fibers.
Is 1680D always better than 1050D? Heavier, not better. 1680D adds weight and stiffness many projects do not need and that makes sewing harder.
Is generic 1050D the same as CORDURA® Ballistic? No. CORDURA® Ballistic is a branded version of the construction and is priced accordingly. Both are legitimate; they are not the same product.
Can I use them together? Commonly, yes. A pack body in 500D with a 1000D bottom panel is a standard construction.
