Solution-Dyed vs Piece-Dyed Fabric
Solution dyeing adds color during fiber production; piece dyeing colors fabric after it is made. The method is one part of color performance, alongside fiber, colorant, finish and exposure.
What the methods mean
In solution-dyed synthetic fiber, colorant is introduced before the fiber is formed. In piece dyeing, the fabric is dyed after weaving or knitting. Dye penetration and colorfastness vary with the fiber, dye chemistry and process; piece-dyed color is not universally just a surface layer.
Compare the finished fabric
Solution-dyed acrylic is used in outdoor fabrics, including named Sunbrella® products. This does not make all solution-dyed fabrics fade-proof or every piece-dyed fabric unsuitable outdoors. Compare the exact product's lightfastness, cleaning instructions and applicable warranty.
Dye method does not establish waterproofness, breathability or fabric strength. Read the construction, coating and finish separately.
