How to Clean Sunbrella® Fabric

For routine Sunbrella® care, remove loose dirt, blot spills promptly, clean with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and air dry. The exact instructions can vary by product line, installation, and stain type, so use the care guide for the named fabric.

Cleaning sequence

Situation Starting method Important limit
Loose dirt Brush or rinse it away before it settles Avoid driving grit deeper into the fabric
Fresh liquid spill Blot with a clean, dry cloth Do not rub the spill across a larger area
Routine cleaning Mild soap and water with a sponge or very soft brush Rinse until all soap residue is removed
Oil-based stain Use an absorbent first, then follow the applicable stain instructions Test and follow the exact product guidance
Stubborn mildew on surface dirt Follow Sunbrella’s diluted-bleach instructions for the applicable line Protect surrounding materials and the environment; rinse thoroughly
After deep cleaning Air dry completely and assess the finish Some cleaning methods can require approved retreatment

Do not apply one care rule to every Sunbrella® product

Sunbrella’s support guidance says machine-washing eligibility varies by product type. Some upholstery products can be machine washed, while shade, sling, and Horizon products should not be treated the same way. Do not dry clean or tumble dry unless the exact care documentation expressly allows it.

Before using bleach or a retreatment

Confirm the product line and installation. Bleach can discolor adjacent non-Sunbrella materials and can harm the surrounding environment. A retreatment should be compatible with the fabric and applied only after cleaning and complete air drying.

Use the NY Tarp Sunbrella® catalog to identify the exact product code, then compare marine and upholstery applications.
