Use 1000D nylon for the shell of most tool bags, and switch to ballistic nylon when the bag carries sharp-cornered contents. Reinforce the bottom either way. The fabric choice follows the failure: abrasion on the outside, puncture from the inside.
Match the fabric to the failure
- Abrasion — a tool bag is dragged, set down and loaded against rough surfaces. Start with heavy CORDURA fabric when surface wear is the main concern.
- Puncture and tearing — sharp corners press into the fabric from inside. Compare ballistic nylon when a dense basket weave suits the build.

Practical notes
- Double the bottom or add a second layer — it is the first place to fail.
- Box the corners so the bag stands open and the fabric isn’t creased under load.
- Use bonded nylon thread and a size 18 needle; see sewing heavy nylon at home.
